3-region flight awards – for trips with a stopover
If you want a flight award that enables you to transfer within a third region, you can book a 3-region flight award. You can use this stopover for a longer stay. In many cases, this requires fewer award miles compared to two regular flight awards. You can find the regions in the country table on page 2 of the Star Alliance flight award chart.
An easy example: You start in New York (JFK), enjoy a stay in Frankfurt (FRA) and then fly on to Bangkok (BKK). Region 1 is the starting region (North America), region 2 is the stopover region (Europe) and region 3 is the destination region (Southeast Asia). With the 3-region flight award, you save 40,000 on this route in comparison to standard flight awards in Economy Class. This is because you only have to spend 100,000 compared to 140,000 for two standard flight awards.
